Course Description
An advanced course in technique, dance forms and rhythms of flamenco dance. Emphasis is placed on proper body alignment, arm and footwork precision and artistry, rhythm and improvisational skills with live musicians at a high intermediate/advanced level. ADVISORY: DANC A247. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Recognize and execute a variety of Flamenco dances at an advanced level utilizing taconeo, braceo, floreo, palmas and castanets.
- Demonstrate proper body alignment, movement techniques, and musicailty while performing complex footwork (taconeo) and rhythmic clapping (palmas) at an advanced level.
Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate intermediate hand clapping to a 6/8 and 4/4 rhythm.
- 2. Demonstrate an intermediate dance with castanets to a 6/8 rhythm.
- 3. Demonstrate high intermediate/advanced castanet exercises while dancing to a 6/8 rhythm using counter beats.
- 4. Demonstrate advanced footwork combinations to a 6/9 and 4/4 rhythm using counter beats.
- 5. Demonstrate how to improvise with a guitarist and singer
- 6. Demonstrate ability to construct a combination using choreography and improvisation with a flamenco guitarist.

Lab Content
Lab Content: Practice tacaneo (foot patterns) to 6/8 rhythms. Practice flamenco clapping in 6/8 rhythms. Practice combinations with guitarist and singer. Practice improvisation techniques. Rehearse combinations with props. Fans Shawls Hats Rehearse combinations with castanets. Peer critiques and video tape practices. Performance in front of an audience demonstrating high intermediate/advanced techniques Traditional choreography Contemporary choreography

Instructional Techniques
Lecture and discussion; demonstrations; participation and group practice; observation of experienced teachers; compose and improvise with a live guitarist and singer; written assignments; skills evaluations; video taping and self evaluations.
Reading Assignments
One to two hours of outside reading and/or viewing videos. One to two hours of outside rehearsal practice of skills learned in class.
Writing Assignments
Report on a flamenco topic, critique of a concert, self-evaluation.
Out-of-class Assignments
One-half to one hour of research approximately every two weeks to work on presentation of selected topic, attendance of a live flamenco concert.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Concert critique evaluating dance skills and choreography skills viewed. Self-evaluation of personal development.

Skills demonstration for skills tests; written report.
Eligible Disciplines
Dance: Masters degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
