Course Description

Assists the dancer-choreographer (non-musician) in building a knowledge of the fundamentals of music through the limited study of theory, terminology and notation. The course is designed to present the development of music and dance in historical perspective, to develop through listening an awareness of the musical literature available, to train dancer and musician to work together through development of a common vocabulary and a working knowledge of each other's craft. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Instructional Techniques

Rhythm and movement exercises. Listening and analysis, notation drills.

Reading Assignments

Assigned reading from instructor handouts. 1 hour per week.

Writing Assignments

You will attend one musical event and write a summary of what you heard. Your paper will address elements of classroom study and how the musical event employed them. Student will write and perform musical phrases in solo and ensemble settings. 1 hour per week.

Out-of-class Assignments

Practice for skill development. 2 hours per week.

Tests, skill demonstrations, problem solving exercises, movement studies, classroom written assignments.

Eligible Disciplines

Dance: Master's degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Master's degree required. Music: Master's degree in music OR bachelor's degree in music AND master's degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
