Course Description
A technique course in the study of various dance forms and rhythms in flamenco dance. Emphasizes on proper alignment, rhythm, footwork and arm work within a flamenco dance movement form at an intermediate and advanced level. ADVISORY: DANC A135 or successful audition, validated in class during the first week of the course. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Perform complex rhythms common to Flamenco in both footwork (taconeo) and rhythmic clapping (palmas).
- Recognize and execute various Flamenco dance styles including taconeo, braceo, floreo and palmas at an advanced beginner level.
Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate high intermediate/advanced footwork combinations to a 2/4 rhythm using counter beats.
- 2. Demonstrate high intermediate/advanced castanets exercises.
- 3. Demonstrate simple hand-clapping to a 2/4 rhythm using counter beats.
- 4. Demonstrate a dance with castanets to a 2/4 rhythm. (Garrotin-1st part).
- 5. Demonstrate rhythmic accuracy with the 2/4 rhythm.
- 6. Demonstrate single turns.
- 7. Play castanets while doing dance movements to a 2/4 rhythm.
- 8. Demonstrate hand-clapping while moving.
- 9. Perform “vuletas quebradas.”

Written critiques of performance viewing. (approximately 2 hours per semester.)
Out-of-class Assignments
Practicing vocabulary as well as movements and choreography studied in class. Attend Faculty, Student, and/or professional dance concert. (approximately 2 hours per each lecture hour.)

Dance critiques (paper). Students critique to dance performance.
Eligible Disciplines
Dance: Masters degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
