Course Description

A movement course designed to teach traditional and contemporary dances of various African cultures. Includes rhythms, song forms, use of costume pieces, and information on the integral link between dance, chant and social/religious aspects of African cultures. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Students will be able to execute fundamental dance vocabulary, rhythms and body isolations essential to African dance.
  2. Demonstrate progress in performing songs, basic drum rhythms and dances from African regions including Mali, Guinea and the Congo.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate an acceptable skill level in the use of the body appropriate to the dances taught.
  • 2. Demonstrate an acceptable level of performance ability of sequences of movement and chants taught.
  • 3. Demonstrate basic rhythmic elements through clapping or stamping
  • 4. Demonstrate basic rhythmic accuracy in doing the dance movement to the rhythms played.
  • 5. Explain through a written test or discussion the integration of culture/religion/ dance in African cultures.
  • 6. Analyze and critique in writing the experience of attending a dance concert and the content of that performance.

Lab Content

Lab Activity Warm-up exercises: body isolations; torso, hips, limbs, head. Shifts of weight; strength and flexibility-posture of body in West African dance forms Locomotor movements and combinations of various West African dance styles             Vocal and movement “call and response” forms     Coordination of “poly-rhythmic” drumming and dance forms - feeling the beat. Study of drumming and chants from the Yorbu and Ashanti cultures.
