Course Description

A technique course in the study of various dance forms and rhythms in flamenco dance. Emphasizes on proper alignment, rhythm, footwork and arm work within a flamenco dance movement form. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Understand Flamenco dance vocabulary at the beginning level.
  2. Demonstrate proper body alignment and movement techniques at the beginner level, including footwork (taconeo) and rhythmic clapping (palmas).

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate an ability to do footwork combinations to a 2/4 rhythm.
  • 2. Demonstrate an ability to do passages maintaining the basics of line, foot placement and arm and hand movements.
  • 3. Show an ability to do castanets combinations.
  • 4. Demonstrate the ability to do dance to a 2/4 rhythm (Tangos - 1st part, part 2).
  • 5. Demonstrate an ability to do hand-clapping combinations to a 2/4 rhythm.
  • 6. Demonstrate ability to do single turns
  • 7. Demonstrate ability to do ?vuletas quebradas?

2-3 hours writting dance critique on a live dance performance.

1 hour weekly reading assignmnets as assigned by instructor.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Written test based on lectures, discussion, and reading assignments. Skill demonstration. Completions of assignments, journal, term paper, attending two concerts. Participation and attendance.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Dance critiques (paper). Students critique to dance performance.

Eligible Disciplines

Dance: Master's degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
