Course Description

This course is designed to introduce student-athletes to a successful college and transfer experience. Athletic regulations including the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) transfer requirements will be covered. The course introduces college success skills, including college expectations, resources, policies, student/athlete life balance, life after sports. Definitions and requirements for certificates and degrees, and higher education in California, including transfer process are covered. Students develop a Comprehensive Student Educational Plan (CSEP) based on personality and career assessments, individual educational goals, and discuss strategies for selecting a major. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC: Credit Limitation: COLL G100, COUN G104, COUN G105, COUN G115, COUN G150, COUN G151, COUN G152, COUN G153, COUN G154, COUN G155, COUN G156 and COUN G205 combined: maximum credit, 3 units.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of athletic regulations including; qualifier versus non-qualifier status, initial and continuing eligibility at the community college, and NCAA and NAIA transfer requirements.
  3. Compare and contrast certificates, degrees, and transfer programs.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of academic rules and regulations.
  5. Outline goals through counselor assisted analysis of their educational, career and personal objectives.
  6. Analyze life-long learning strategies that are based on on-going self-assessment, education, and acceptance of personal responsibility.
  7. Articulate how theories and practices learned in academic settings can be applied and integrated into personal, athletic, and professional pursuits.

  • 6. Evaluate academic and career goals based on experiences in the course and during the time at the community college.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Analyze systems of higher education and athletics influence on choice of educational and career pathway.  Identify core competencies associated with persistance and completion of academic and athletic goals. Investigate career and athletic pathways via computerized and hardbound recourses.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Report on a career pathway related to intended program of study Apply theoretical models of decision making to the  process of selecting a program of study, transfer institution, or alternative training program Design of a Comprehensive Student Educational Plan (CSEP).

Eligible Disciplines

Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required. Title 5, section 53410.1
