Course Description
A study of considerations of natural or artificial disasters to assist child care providers in the development of a comprehensive plan to ensure an effective response to emergency situations. Formerly known as EC A262. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Identify issues related to natural or man-made disasters and develop a comprehensive plan to ensure an effective response to emergency situations for childcare settings.
Course Objectives
- 1. Evaluate emergency plans for natural disasters.
- 2. Identify types of structural and non-structural hazards in a child care setting.
- 3. Describe basic disaster preparedness supplies, equipment, search and rescue techniques, and first aid procedures for a child care program.
- 4. Analyze common emotional needs during disaster.
- 5. Describe Post Traumatic Stress Response symptoms.
- 6. Discuss important considerations in preparation of young children for disasters.
- 7. Identify activities appropriate for helping a child work through a traumatic experience.

Lecture and discussion of concepts presented Exhibits and demonstration of materials, supplies, equipment necessary in disasters Video tapes on disaster preparedness to expand students understanding of concepts Overheads to reinforce preparedness activities Small group exercises where students will problem-solve preparedness planning Students will work in small groups to develop a sample disaster plan
Reading Assignments
Read articles and websites provided. 5 hours total per semester
Writing Assignments
Working in small groups, students will create, write, and share out 5 different games that prepare children for emergencies. 4 hours total per semester.
Out-of-class Assignments

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Small and large group participation Completion of written in-class exercise requiring analysis of non-structural hazards in a child care facility. Develop a plan for disaster preparedness for a child care program
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will analyze their current programs disaster plan as a pre-test A post-test, comprised of a brief essay, will describe the students disaster plan
Eligible Disciplines
Child development/early childhood education: Masters degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
