Course Description
Methods for fostering creativity in children and teachers. Emphasis will be on cultivating music and art expression through application of developmental theory. Formerly known as EC A131. Note: TB CLEARANCE REQUIRED. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Plan and implement appropriate art and music activities that respond to the children's interest and needs and make appropriate adaptations for children with special needs and English Language Learners.
Course Objectives
- 1. Discuss creativity and its value in the childs classroom.
- 2. Evaluate a classroom art center and art program for developmentally appropriate materials, activities and practices.
- 3. Observe and evaluate the teachers role in supporting childrens art and music development.
- 4. Analyze childrens art and music performance to determine stage of development.
- 5. Plan and implement appropriate art and music activities that respond to the childrens interest and needs.
- 6. Discuss the developmental value of the following activities: paint, clay, collage, drawing, singing, moving, creative movement.
- 7. Plan activities that encourage creative thinking.
- 8. Plan activities that include elements from a variety of cultures.
- 9. Identify and present good music for singing and dancing.
- 10. Adapt art, music, and movement activities for children with special needs.

Observation and evaluation of a classroom art program. Observation and evaluation of the teachers role in supporting creativity. Research and evaluate appropriate creative experiences for young children. Plan, implement and evaluate art and music activities done at lab site. 3 hours a week

Student projects, class presentations, observations, examinations, and student participation.

Eligible Disciplines
Child development/early childhood education: Masters degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
