Course Description

Formerly: ART G158. This course is an overview of the history of photography from its invention to the present. Students will examine photography's social, historical, and political impact and look at how images were produced, circulated, and consumed in mass media as well as in public and private settings. Photography’s multiple roles in society as an artistic, scientific, commercial, and journalistic medium will also be explored. The work of key photographers, artistic styles, and technical innovations that have shaped both darkroom and digital photography will also be covered. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Objectives

  • 2. Identify the stylistic characteristics of major photographic movements and photographers.
  • 3. Analyze photographs for historical and conceptual significance in written and oral form.
  • 4. Describe photographs using art historical and photography specific vocabulary.
  • 5. Analyze formal attributes specific to the medium of photography.
  • 6. Evaluate the impact of technology on photography.

Eligible Disciplines

Art: Masters degree in fine arts, art, or art history OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Note: “masters degree in fine arts” as used here refers to any masters degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also, art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing, or other non-plastic arts. Masters degree required. Art history: Masters degree in art history, history of art and architecture, or visual culture/visual studies OR bachelors degree in art history and masters degree in history OR masters degree in art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in art history OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
