Course Description
This course provides an overview of art and architecture from the Western modern period of the 19th and 20th centuries. ADVISORY: ART C100 and/or ART C101 recommended, or knowledge of art historical movements. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Visually identify the major artists and works of art in the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements and be able to compare and contrast the works both in terms of composition and context.
- Analyze the style, composition, and purpose of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artworks and their meaning in terms of historical, socio-political, and global significance.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify, examine, and assess representative works of art and architecture from the art historical periods covered in this course employing appropriate art historical terminology.
- 2. Analyze, discuss, and differentiate works of art and architecture in terms of historical context and cultural values.
- 3. Analyze, discuss, and distinguish the roles of art, architecture, and the artist from the art historical periods covered in this course.

This course covers art and architecture of the major modern movements from the 19th century and 20th centuries, including Classicism and Romanticism Realism Impressionism Post-Impressionism Symbolism Art Nouveau Fauvism Cubism Non-Objectivity Expressionism Dada, Surrealism American Modernism

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will demonstrate critical thinking through written visual analysis in the form of essays and papers as well as active participation in class discussions and quizzes.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will be required to complete multiple essays as a component of the midterm and/or final exams and at least one additional paper based upon primary or secondary historical sources.
Eligible Disciplines
Art: Masters degree in fine arts, art, or art history OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Note: “masters degree in fine arts” as used here refers to any masters degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also, art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing, or other non-plastic arts. Masters degree required.
