Course Description

An advanced drawing and painting course. The primary focus is pictorial composition. Creative solutions to the posed model situations are emphasized. Design of the picture plane using traditional compositional devices will be taught. Examples from old master art reproductions and their art history will be integral part of the class. PREREQUISITE: ART A121. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Create a portfolio of drawings and paintings that demonstrate the following compositional formats: Horizontal/vertical, Architectonic, Zigzag/spiral, Frame, The bridge, Vignette, Thirds composition, Geometric composition.
  2. Apply an understanding of figure composition in critiquing works of art.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Analyze and see the human form with understanding.
  • 2. Understand drawing as graphic communication.
  • 3. Understand the importance of tone (value) in drawing.
  • 4. Identify contemporary concepts.
  • 5. Recognize the principles of pictorial design and composition.
  • 6. Demonstrate creative thinking through the projects they produce.
  • 7. Express proportional relations of two or more figures in the same composition.
  • 8. Evaluate artwork present during a critique.
