Course Description

Continuation of ART A130 with emphasis on personal expression. Alternate painting mediums introduced. PREREQUISITE: ART A130. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Demonstrate how painting methodology as it relates to the historical development of painting as a document of visual impression, emotional expression, and symbolic or allegorical approaches.
  2. Demonstrate skill development in the use of oil, and/or acrylic or alkyd paint as direct or indirect approaches to the painting problem.
  3. Demonstrate different stylistic techniques that effectively investigate brush stroke, paint application, color usage, and composition.

Course Objectives

  • 2. Develop traditional painting skills.
  • 3. Develop experimental painting techniques.
  • 4. Develop a critical analysis of painting.
  • 5. Begin to develop a personal direction.
  • 6. Experience in various techniques and approaches to painting.

  • 8. Develop a greater knowledge and appreciation of contemporary painters.

Introduction to Art A131: Historical development of painting style  Representational Abstract Non-objective Conceptual approaches text and image Historical development of painting content, themes, and purposes Development of personal interpretive approaches to subject Visual impressionism Emotional expressionism Symbolic and allegorical approaches Expanding theme variations Social, political, religious, fantasy, nature and environmental issues Safety and health precautions Preparing pigments and binders Traditional materials: oil, acrylic alternative painting mediums such as encaustic, egg tempera, and oil pastels Experimental materials and alternative surfaces:  Mixed media techniques, collage and assemblages Expanded forms/breaking the rectangle Approaches to researching subject: Preliminary studies Writing about art/journal keeping Painting analysis: Verbal and written analysis on painting structure Art A131B and C progressively develop painting and conceptual skills in the students, changing as the students ideas and goals change with continued personal interpretive approaches.
