Course Description

This course provides an overview of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the Contemporary period. Enrollment Limitation: ART A101H; students who complete ART A101 may not enroll in or receive credit for ART A101H. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: ARTH 120.C-ID: ARTH 120.

  1. Analyze an artwork in terms of the elements and principles of design.
  2. Recognize the religious, sociopolitical, cultural and environmental factors that have influenced the development of the arts.
  3. Differentiate major art movements, styles and artists.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify, examine, and assess representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period employing appropriate art historical terminology
  • 2. Analyze, discuss, and differentiate works of art and architecture in terms of historical context and cultural values
  • 3. Analyze, discuss, and distinguish the roles of art, architecture, and the artist from the Renaissance to the contemporary period
  • 4. Demonstrate an increased visual sensitivity.
  • 5. Utilize a visual vocabulary
  • 6. Describe the processes and techniques associated with specific art mediums
  • 7. Compare and contrast art in terms of content and context
  • 8. Recognize interconnections between art of the past and art of the present

Lecture Content

This course covers the art and architecture of the following periods: 1.  Italian Renaissance and Mannerism 2.  15th-Century Flemish 3.  Northern Renaissance 4.  Baroque and Rococo 5.  Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Realism 6.  Impressionism and Post-Impressionism 7.  Major movements of the 20th-century

Reading Assignments

Students will be given readings from the most appropriate texts as determined by the instructor.  Students will be expected to do approximately two hours of reading per week.

Writing Assignments

Students will be expected to spend an average of one hour per week on writing assignments.  Writing assignments will be determined by individual instructors and may include papers focused on response, image analysis, compare and contrast, and research.

Out-of-class Assignments

Out-of-class assignments will amount to an average of three hours per week and will be determined by individual instructors.  Assignments may include worksheets, individual and group projects, field trips, and studying for quizzes and exams.

Eligible Disciplines

Art history: Masters degree in art history, history of art and architecture, or visual culture/visual studies OR bachelors degree in art history and masters degree in history OR masters degree in art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in art history OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
