Course Description
This course will provide students with the education needed to meet the skills required to provide personal care services to elders and to consumers with disabilities in a home setting. Topics include Qualities of a Direct Care Worker; Work Settings; Teamwork and Professionalism; Working with Elders; Respecting Differences; Communication Skills; Working with a Consumer Who Is Depressed; Infection Control; Body Systems and Common Diseases and Body Mechanics. PREREQUISITE: ALH A001N or concurrent enrollment. ADVISORY: Identification required on first day of class; No felony convictions. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

- Demonstrate competency in provision of assistance of activities of daily living (ADL) eating; toileting; ambulation; dressing and personal care
- Employ industry standard methods when dealing with clients with dementia, mental illness, developmental and physical disabilities
Course Objectives
- 1. Provide competent care related to Activities of Living (ADLs) Nutrition, eating, bathing and personal care, Toileting, dressing, housekeeping, and ambulation.
- 2. Recognize workers rights; employ time management and stress reduction skills related to the patient care aide.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will perform return demontration at a 75% or higher level from instructor perfomrance for patient care skills and correct responses on written assignments.

Correct fill-in answers from instructor provided handouts; proper return demonstration of lab skills and problem solving ability as evidenced by correct action whrn prompted by instructor using current standards of insustry.
Eligible Disciplines
Health care ancillaries (medical assisting, hospice worker, home care aide...: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
