This is a low beginning level certificate program in English as a Second Language which includes basic English reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It prepares students for further academic study in high beginning and intermediate level ESL courses by improving fundamental English language skills through a step-by-step grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening curriculum. After completing this certificate, students may go on to high beginning and intermediate ESL classes and pursue an ESL Intermediate Preparation for Careers Certificate of Completion, leading to higher-level ESL courses and eventually academic programs as well as career training programs. 

Program Level Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Given writing prompts, write simple grammatically-correct English sentences with subjects, verbs, and objects.
  2. Given a short reading passage, explain its content in complete sentences.
  3. Respond correctly and appropriately to simple spoken commands in English.

This award confirms that a student has completed a noncredit program that prepares students to progress in a career path or to take degree-applicable courses.
