Course Description
Formerly: Elementary Vietnamese. This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental skills of spoken and written Vietnamese. Students will learn correct pronunciation, basic structural patterns, and necessary vocabulary in order to write and understand basic sentences and carry on simple conversations. This course is equivalent to two years of high school Vietnamese. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC: Corresponds to two years of high school study.

Introduction to basic vocabulary and sounds of Vietnamese Pronunciation of Vietnamese vowels and consonants (their initial, medial and final positions) Vietnamese tone system, personal pronouns, phrase structures, and other basic principles of Vietnamese grammar Requesing help, warnings, commands, greetings, locations, directions, whats this, asking for things, getting information, questions about an individual, personal needs, and other common dialogues. Numbers and counting; time of day Learning to read and understand short, basic texts regarding aspects of Vietnamese culture Vietnamese customs, dos and donts

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will: 1.Be able to compare and contrast Vietnamese and English grammatical structures. 2.Formulate simple ideas into simple Vietnamese. 3.Engage in conversations on learned topics.

Eligible Disciplines
Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
