Course Description
Formerly: VIET C260. VIET C160 is designed to enrich the communication skills of the Vietnamese bilingual student. The course focuses instruction on improving the communication skills in formal and familiar ways of speaking, reading, using correct grammar, spelling, vocabulary building, and composing. The course explores culture through readings, plays, and films. Class is conducted primarily in Vietnamese. ADVISORY: Native or near-native fluency in Vietnamese recommended. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Differentiate between spoken and written language and between formal and familiar Vietnamese linguistic patterns with attention to the orthographic code and mechanics of writing.
- Demonstrate the techniques of public speaking by engaging in a debate.
- Compare and contrast the current and historical cultural climate of Vietnam in order to understand the generation gap and tolerate cultural and political differences.

Writing Assignments
Written assignments to target the correct use of Vietnamese grammar including the Vietnamese alphabet, verbs, nouns, prepositions, conjunctions, subordinate clauses, and idiomatic forms.
Out-of-class Assignments
Research and write short essays in Vietnamese on the following topics: Social And political issues in the Vietnamese community Political systems of Vietnam, current and historical Urban problems of Vietnam, current and historical
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Compare and contrast current and historical culture of Vietnam. Differentiate between the spoken and written language. Differentiate between formal and familiar Vietnamese linguistic patterns.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Essay(s) comparing and contrasting aspects of Vietnamese culture and history. Demonstrate the techniques of public speaking by engaging in a debate. Pair and small group work. Role-playing. Listening comprehension activities.
Eligible Disciplines
Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
