Course Description

Formerly: Musical Theater Production and Performance 1. Introduction to the principles and techniques of performing for musical theater. Students will learn and apply acting, dancing, solo and choral singing and audition techniques with emphasis on introductory participation in musical theater presentations such as musical comedy, musical drama, musical revues, opera or operettas presented at Golden West College. Actors will be selected through the audition/interview process. PREREQUISITE: Audition/interview. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: THTR 191. C-ID: THTR 191.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Evaluate and analyze a musical theater script for rehearsal and performance at an introductory level
  • 2. Create and dramatize the behavioral life of a musical theater character in rehearsal and performance at an introductory level
  • 3. Demonstrate a strong work ethic within a professional framework of collaboration at an introductory level
  • 4. Apply basic skills and methods to performing a musical theater role on stage at an introductory level
  • 5. Use and maintain basic production elements such as props, costumes, and furniture to create the world of a chosen musical theater play at an introductory level
  • 6. Recognize and demonstrate their collaborative responsibilities with the director and designers in rehearsal and in performance of a musical theater play at an introductory level

Musical Theater rehearsal and performance protocol and procedures. The actors responsibilities The directors responsibilities Production staff responsibilities Evaluation of the historical and thematic elements of musical theater productions. The authors intentions The political, social, philosophical and moral agenda of the play. Interpretation and evaluation of the historical circumstances. Actors script evaluation Scoring the role Exploration and creation of prior circumstances. Creation of the time and place obligations for the script. Identification and evaluation of character obligation. Musical Theater acting skills Relationship work with the other actors. Creation of the behavioral life of the character. Preparations for investing in the emotional life of the role. Outlining the needs and pursuits of the character. Staging of musical theater productions Working with the director. Justifying physical action. Creation of character behavior. Use of props, costumes and scenery elements. Rehearsal of musical theater productions Use of given circumstances to justify dialog. Student will demonstrate introductory level skill proficiency in acting, dancing and/or singing in a musical theater presentation.

Eligible Disciplines

Dance: Masters degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Drama/theater Arts: Masters degree or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance OR bachelors degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater/performance AND masters degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
