Course Description

This course is an advanced level course for film and stage make-up techniques including design, sculpting, molding, casting, and finishing techniques of prosthetic make-up. ADVISORY: THEA G177. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

  2. Use advanced makeup techniques to create stage makeup effects.
  3. Create special effect makeup designs for stage, film, and other media while using prosthetic appliances.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Use safety and hygiene procedures of makeup design including elements of skin preparation and removal of makeup products.
  • 2. Create old age, prosthetic, and corrective makeup effects at an advanced level.
  • 3. Work collaboratively with the director, makeup designer, costume designer, and other members of the production and design team to prepare a makeup design appropriately interpreting an author's characterization.
  • 4. Communicate advanced design application requirements to a makeup crew member, dresser, or actor.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Analysis of a play text, the director and costume designer's requirements, and research sources to create a comprehensive makeup design. Analysis of a design to source, procure and utilize appropriate tools and supplies.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Creation of written character description with makeup charts. Skill demonstration of advanced-level techniques including the use of appropriate materials and tools.

Eligible Disciplines

Drama/theater Arts: Master's degree or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance OR bachelor's degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater/performance AND master's degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
