Course Description
This course is a practical introduction to the techniques of applying theatrical makeup. Recommended for students of drama/theater arts interested in gaining a better understanding of the proper uses of theatrical makeup. Required for students planning to transfer to California State University, Long Beach, Fullerton or Dominguez Hills. Students are required to attend Golden West College Theater Arts department productions. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: THTR 175. C-ID: THTR 175.

- Explain the interaction of heredity, environment, temperament, health, and age as it is manifested in facial characteristics and displayed in theaterical makeup.
- Analyze a play script or libretto to define and create a theatrical character through makeup.
- Use all theatrical makeup materials properly and safely.
- Function as a make-up technician under live theatrical production conditions.
Course Objectives
- 1. Create a character as defined in a play script or libretto through the use of theatrical makeup.
- 2. Understand the procedures, responsibilities and duties of a makeup crew member for a live theatrical production.
- 3. Identify, create and execute aging, corrective, character or fantasy makeup designs.
- 4. Identify, create and style wigs, hair pieces and/or facial hair as appropriate for a live theatrical production.

Creation of a written character chart for each assignment to include detailed character descriptions. Written examinations to demonstrate various procedures of makeup techniques. Attendance at live theatrical productions for the purpose of written critical evaluation of theatrical makeup in performance

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Critical thinking skills are being continually used in the students selection process when making choices in overcoming the various obstacles that develop during the creation and execution (application) phase of the class. The students ability at diagnosing and solving unfamiliar problems by synthesizing various concepts and techniques learned in class will contribute to an overall understanding of the working procedure in the make-up area.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Emphasis is placed upon the introduction and development of skills and talents required for an understanding and application of stage make-up in a theater environment. Written assignments may include the creation of character charts for each assignment, detailed character descriptions, and written exams demonstrating the various procedures of make-up techniques.
Eligible Disciplines
Drama/theater Arts: Masters degree or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance OR bachelors degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater/performance AND masters degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
