Course Description
Students will work collaboratively at an advanced skill level to produce and perform a play. Each student's area of involvement will be in one or more of the following areas: acting, technical, stage management, or house management. Student's area of involvement will be determined by the instructor with the student to satisfy individual expectations. Actors must audition for roles. 14 arranged Lab Hours. PREREQUISITE: THEA A215. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Collaborate at an advanced level with students and faculty to rehearse, prepare and perform a stage production.
Course Objectives
- 1. Meet the required objectives at an advanced level of accomplishment within a set time frame.
- 2. Function at an advanced level as a member of an ensemble/team.
- 3. If an actor: Analyze problems of characterization and become proficient with justifiable acting decisions
- 4. Synthesize specific production elements into a cohesive whole.
- 5. If a technician, designer or manager: Determine production needs and meet those needs within time and budget limitations.
- 6. Distinguish between materials included in published versions of script with what is necessary for production being presented.
- 7. Follow basic theatre etiquette in rehearsal and performance.
Lecture Content
At an advanced level the student will learn and complete duties in one or more of the following areas: Acting - create supporting role(s) in cast of characters of a play Scenery - plan and help execute construction, painting, installation of scenic units. Design or assistant design. Lighting - operate, hang, focus lighting instruments used to illuminate play. Design or assistant design. Make-up - design and apply actor make-up. Create simple special effects Costume - locate, construct, fit, maintain and store costumes, assist with costume changes. Design or assistant design. Properties - create list, secure, maintain required properties. Arrange prop table, supervise property use during production. Stage Management - organize rehearsals and run performances. Production - house manager, poster/program designer, promotion. Demonstration of knowledge of theatre rules and etiquette
Lab Content
LABORATORY CONTENT: The following content will be covered in a combination of 40 scheduled and 14 arranged lab hours. Students will work under faculty supervision on their specific assigned areas of production. These will vary depending on the students production assignment from acting rehearsals and performances to technical preparation and completion of technical duties during performances. Students at an advanced level will be expected to take on more complicated duties and to execute them with less immediate supervision. Advanced students will also be expected to mentor beginning students. Independent study will include independent memorization, research and preparation and planning for rehearsals and performances.

Reading Assignments
Reading 2-3 hours per week from the following: The written text of the play. Reading of assigned research and other background materials related to the play. Organizational documents, lists etc.
Writing Assignments
Written character analysis (actors) Written planning lists and schedules, etc. (technicians and production personnel)
Out-of-class Assignments
Outside research into character, subject matter of the play, or other aspects of the play production. Memorization of lines (actors) Reasearch and creation of technical aspects: planning lists, task breakdowns, production schedules, budgets etc. (technicians and production personnel)
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Student required to meet deadlines, must demonstrate necessary skills in specific assignment. Evaluations determined by rehearsal and performance.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Successful completion of assigned task is demonstration of proficiency.
