Course Description

Students will participate at an intermediate skill level in one or more production aspects presenting a touring show at various locations. These aspects include: acting, technical design and production, and stage management. Students will also learn to interact with audiences during question and answer sessions. Acting roles are assigned through audition. ADVISORY: THEA A145. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Collaborate with faculty and students to rehearse,produce and perform at an intermediate/advanced level in an interactive touring educational theatre production.
  • 2. Demonstrate personal organization and discipline skills as well as basic theatre etiquette needed to perform successfully at unfamiliar locations.
  • 3. Demonstrate mastery of the plays subject by interacting successfully with audience members during Q A sessions after performances.

Lecture Content

Students in their second semester will work as part of an ensemble and at individual levels to explore the text and social historical or other background knowledge required to understand rehearse and perform an educational play in a touring situation. Second semester students will improve their skills at an intermediate level in one or more of the following areas: Actors at an intermediate level will audition rehearse memorize and prepare characterizations for their role(s) in performance. Technical students at an intermediate level will work independently and with others to stage manage or prepare and run technical elements including sets props lights sound and costumes. All students will collaborate to prepare the production for performance at varied locations on tour and for presentation and direct interaction with varied audiences on tour.

Lab Content

Acting students will audition, memorize lines, rehearse, and prepare their characterization(s) for performance in an intermediate or advanced level role. Intermediate/advanced level technical students will stage manage or work to organize, create and prepare one or more type of technical elements (sets, lights, sound, props, costumes) for performance. Technical students in their second semester will also organize and run the plays technical aspects during performances. All students will collaborate to organize and transport the entire production safely from one venue to another.

Instructional Techniques

1. Prepare for, experience and evaluate the audition process.2. Apply principles of all technical disciplines unique to touring shows.3. Analyze and interpret a character or characters from selected literature.4. Synthesize personal organization and discipline skills needed to perform at unfamiliar locations.5. Anticipate topics and questions for post-production discussions.6. Follow basic rules of theatre etiquette.7. Interact successfully with audience members during Q A sessions after performances.8. Perform confidently in a variety of venues and situations.

Reading Assignments

Acting students will spend 2 or more hours per week reading and memorizing the play script.  Technical students will spend 1 hour reading the play script. All students will spend 1 hour reading research materials on the subject/theme of the play.

Writing Assignments

All students will spend at least 2 hours per week writing in a production journal. Students will also write a research paper based on the theme/subject of the play. Acting students will prepare performance scripts with acting, blocking and technical notations.

Out-of-class Assignments

For actors: Prepare performance scripts with acting, blocking and technical notations. Memorization. For technicians: Preparation and planning for technical elements.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will be questioned about aspects of his or her character, the author and other elements of the selected literature. Students will meet all deadlines and demonstrate proper discipline for performance.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Demonstrate proficiency in collaboration, planning and performance of assigned duties using proper performance discipline. Research paper on theme/subject of play. Demonstrate understanding of the play and of the production process by taking part in post-performance Q A sessions with audiences.
