Course Description

Students will participate in elements of presenting a show at various locations. These elements will include: acting, set design, set construction, lighting, sound design, costuming, make up, and interaction with audiences through question and answer sessions. This course may require occasional overnight stays. Roles are assigned through audition. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Prepare for, experience and evaluate the audition process.
  • 2. Apply principles of all technical disciplines unique to touring shows.
  • 3. Analyze and interpret a character or characters from selected literature.
  • 4. Synthesize personal organization and discipline skills needed to perform at unfamiliar locations.
  • 5. Anticipate topics and questions for post-production discussions.
  • 6. Follow basic rules of theatre etiquette.
  • 7. Interact successfully with audience members during Q A sessions after performances.
  • 8. Perform confidently in a variety of venues and situations.

Lecture Content

Students will work as part of an ensemble and at individual levels to explore the text and social historical or other background knowledge required to understand, rehearse and perform an educational play in a touring situation. Students will gain skills in one or more of the following areas: Actors will audition, rehearse, memorize and prepare characterizations for their role(s) in performance. Technical students will work with others to stage manage or prepare and run technical elements including sets, props, lights, sound and costumes. All students will collaborate to prepare the production for performance at varied locations on tour and for presentation and direct interaction with varied audiences on tour.

Lab Content

Acting students will audition, memorize lines, rehearse, and prepare their characterization(s) for performance as part of the ensemble. Technical students will help stage manage or work on the organization, creation and prepararation of one or more types of technical elements (sets, lights, sound, props, costumes) for performance. Technical students will also help to run the plays technical aspects during performances. All students will collaborate to organize and transport the entire production safely from one venue to another

Instructional Techniques

Reading Assignments

Students will spend approximately 2 hours per week reading performance scripts and research materials.

Writing Assignments

Students will spend approximately 2 hours per week on preparing performance scripts with acting, blocking and technical notations, and preparing character and play analyses and research summaries.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will spend approximately 2 hours per week on memorization of the script, research and planning of roles, and/or technical and design elements required for the production.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

1.   Students will be questioned about aspects of his or her character, the author and other elements of the selected literature. 2.   Students will meet all deadlines and demonstrate proper discipline for performance.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Demonstrate proficiency in overcoming stage-fright and adhering to proper performance discipline. Prepare performance scripts with acting, blocking and technical notations.
