Course Description

Students in their fourth semester with "The Rep" will take part in planning and producing several plays in a position requiring experience, advanced skills and responsibility, such as director, designer, production manager, artistic director, leading actor, etc. ADVISORY: THEA A133. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Successfully collaborate with others in a leadership capacity as a class officer, manager, leading performer, production designer, playwright or technical director to produce a series of stage plays.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Work collaboratively with others.
  • 2. Demonstrate proper theatre etiquette and work habits as a leader in the production of a series of stage plays.
  • 3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of all aspects of the play production process, with advanced-level understanding of one or more areas of concentration.
  • 4. Complete tasks at an advanced level in one or more areas of concentration as part of a play production team. These tasks may include acting in a leading role, directing or designing a play, playwriting, advanced technical work, stage management, production management, house management or publicity.
  • 5. Meet demands of time and budget

Lecture Content

Students will work as a group to create a season of plays. Each individual in their fourth semester will be expected to take a leadership role in their area(s) of expertise: Acting in leading roles- preparation, communication, collaboration, performance.  Designing an entire show- concept, communication, planning and production  Directing- planning, conceptualization, communication, preparation, and production Playwriting- play readings and revisions Publicity/Media Management  Management: scheduling, budgeting, organization as an Artistic Director, Production Manager, Stage Manager. Technical support- communication, planning, scheduling, preparation and performance. Patron support- House Managing

Lab Content

Students in their final semester will work independently and collaboratively under faculty supervision at an advanced level in one or more area of expertise. They will work with other students in a leadership capacity to prepare, practice and perform a series of stage plays. Areas of expertise which will be practiced include:  Acting in leading roles  leading an ensemble rehearsal techniques and etiquette performance rules and etiquette post-performance evaluations Designing an entire show in  scenery costume lighting sound properties post-production evaluations Directing script selection and evaluation-conceptualization casting rehearsal techniques planning and scheduling technical rehearsals performance post-production evaluation Playwriting play readings and revisions Publicity  Media liason Web support/publicity posters and programs Management: scheduling, budgeting, organization Artistic direction  working as Production Manager of at least one production working as Stage manager of at least one show safety techniques backstage etiquette Technical support supervise and organize the construction of scenery, costumes or props supervise and organize light and sound elements safety techniques backstage etiquette Patron support working as a House Manager  safety techniques

Writing Assignments:  Written production analysis, Critiques, Programcopy, Sound and Lighting Charts.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will spend approximately 140 hours outside of class on all out-of-class assignments, including reading and writing assignments         Out-of-Class Assignments: Independent Rehearsal, Memorization, Directing,Costume / Set / Lighting Design and Construction, Program design,Ushering,  Strike and other production Tasks.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Practical examinations:  student must demonstrate to the instructors satisfaction the ability to complete advanced-level tasks as a leading member of the Rep production team.  Fourth semester students will work independently and with others to complete complex, large-scale tasks in their chosen area(s) of concentration.These projects must be completed on time, on budget and to the instructors expectations. Mandatory class-work includes usher and concessions duties for at least one show.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration: Written production analyses.  Written documentation is required for higher-level planning in all aspects of play production, but will vary by area of concentration. Problem solving and skill demonstrations will vary by the students individual area of concentration. Advanced-level students will demonstrate professional etiquette and work habits as they lead others to collaborate on play production. Successful planning and performance of several play productions will demonstrate student success.
