Course Description

This is "The Rep." Experienced students in their third semester will collaborate with others to plan and produce several plays at an advanced skill-level in one or more aspects of play production. Aspects of play production include acting, design, playwriting, publicity, technical production, stage management, production management and house management. This course extends and enriches the student's specific skills and experience at an advanced level. ADVISORY: THEA A132. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Successfully collaborate with others as a crew leader, manager, class officer, designer or intermediate/advanced-level actor or technician to produce a series of stage plays.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Work collaboratively with others.
  • 2. Demonstrate understanding of advanced-level organizational, production or performance tasks.
  • 3. Complete tasks as part of a play production team at an advanced level. These may include acting, directing, design or advanced technical work, production management, stage management, house management or publicity.
  • 4. Act as a leader in a chosen area of production by organizing and supervising group tasks.
  • 5. Work independently to plan and execute advanced-level tasks without direct supervision.
  • 6. Meet demands of time and budget

Lecture Content

Production management, planning and scheduling- pre production, performance, and post-production.  Production critiques  Acting- auditions, rehearsals, technical rehearsals, performances.  Design- pre-production, production, technical rehearsals in all design fields Directing- pre-production planning, directorial concept and design concept, rehearsals, production meetings, technical rehearsals, performance. Writing- play readings and play revisions Technical support- preparation, planning, technical rehearsals and performances. Patron support Each third semester student will receive individual instruction in one or more of these lecture areas. The student may learn a new production task and/or continue instruction in a current area of expertise at a level of greater independence, skill and leadership .

Lab Content

Students will work as a group to create a season of plays. Each individual will take part in two or more of the following areas of play production at an advanced level of skill and responsibility: Acting (intermediate/advanced level) audition techniques rehearsal techniques and etiquette performance rules and etiquette Play production planning and scheduling Working as a designer  scenery costume lighting sound properties Directing script selection and evaluation casting rehearsal techniques planning and scheduling technical rehearsals performance post-performance evaluation Playwriting play readings and revisions Publicity  press releases posters programs Management: scheduling, budgeting, organization Artistic direction  production management stage management safety techniques backstage etiquette Technical support light and sound board operation backstage crew head costume dresser- crew head construction of scenery, costumes or props preparation of light and sound elements safety techniques backstage etiquette Patron support House management ushering and concessions work < safety techniques

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will spend approximately 140 hours outside of class on all out-of-class assignments, including reading and writing assignments         Out-of-Class Assignments: Independent Rehearsal, Memorization, Directing,Costume / Set / Lighting Design and Construction, Program design,Ushering,  Strike and other production Tasks.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Demonstration of Critical Thinking: advanced level students will work at a greater level of independence to plan, prepare and perform tasks in their chosen areas of expertise.  These students will work under faculty supervision as mentors to other students, demonstrating tasks and critiqueing and guiding other students in their work.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Production analyses. Skill demonstrations and problem solving during pre-production planning, rehearsal, and performance. Writing of schedules, guidelines, calendars and other documents required for advanced-level production planning.
