Course Description
This is "The Rep." Second-semester students will work at a higher skill level on more complex tasks in at least two aspects of play production while staging a series of stage plays. Play production aspects including acting, design, publicity, technical production, stage management and house management will be practiced. This course extends and enriches experience beyond previous courses. ADVISORY: THEA A131. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Collaborate at an intermediate level as a performer, manager or technician with students and faculty to produce and perform a series of stage plays.
Course Objectives
- 1. Work collaboratively with others.
- 2. Complete tasks at an intermediate skill-level as part of a play production team. These may include acting in a play,directing a play, technical or design work, stage management, house management or publicity.
- 3. Participate in class meetings at an intermediate level during discussions and planning sessions.
- 4. Plan and complete some assigned tasks without direct supervision.
- 5. Work as a crew leader on one or more tasks.
- 6. Meet time demands on assigned production tasks.
Lecture Content
Students will work as a group to create a season of plays. Each student in the second semester will receive individual instruction in a new production task or will receive continued instruction in a current area of expertise at a more advanced level. The student will take part in two or more of the following areas of play production: Acting- audition, rehearsal and performance Play production planning and scheduling Design- scenery, costume, lighting, sound, properties Directing pre-production planning, casting, rehearsals, performances, post-performance evaluation Playwriting- play readings and revisions Publicity - media and program design Management: scheduling, budgeting, organization Technical support- crew and board operation Patron support
Lab Content
Students will work as a group under faculty supervision to create a season of plays. Each individual student will receive individual instruction in a new production task or will receive continued instruction in a current area of expertise at a more advanced level. These areas of expertise are: Acting audition techniques rehearsal techniques in supporting roles performance rules and etiquette Play production planning and scheduling Areas of design scenery costume lighting sound properties Directing script selection and evaluation casting rehearsal techniques planning and scheduling technical rehearsals performance post-performance evaluation Playwriting play readings and revisions Publicity press releases posters programs Management: scheduling, budgeting, organization Artistic direction production management stage management safety techniques backstage etiquette Technical support light and sound board operation backstage crew costume dresser construction of scenery, costumes or props preparation of light and sound elements safety techniques backstage etiquette Patron support House management ushering and concessions work safety techniques

Students will spend approximately 140 hours outside of class on all out-of-class assignments, including reading and writing assignments Out-of-Class Assignments: Independent Rehearsal, Memorization, Directing,Costume / Set / Lighting Design and Construction, Program design,Ushering, Strike and other production Tasks.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Practical examinations: Student must demonstrate to the instructors satisfaction the successful completion of practical work on each production. Students in the second semester must demonstrate knowledge in two or more distinct areas of expertise, either in a new (beginning) capacity or in a previous capacity at an intermediate skill level. This work must be completed on time and in the manner outlined in the student assignment handouts or by the instructor.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Written production analyses. Problem solving and skills demonstrations: student must demonstrate to the instructors satisfaction the ability to complete assigned tasks as part of the Rep production team. These projects must be completed on time and in the manner outlined in the student assignment handouts. Mandatory class-work includes usher and concessions duties for at least one show. Worksheets must be completed for every production.
