Course Description

Students will gain practical experience in the application of production responsibilities in any of the following: stage management, house management, construction of scenery, properties or costume, lighting, sound, and running crews of a faculty-directed play. Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic skills needed to create the technical elements and non-performance elements of a stage production. These skills include the basics of set and prop building, scene painting, working on costumes, lighting or sound, stage management and front-of-house management.
  2. Execution of assigned responsibilities in technical production and/or crew assignments for the preparation and performance of a live stage production

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate proficiency in the skills required for a technical theatre crew.
  • 2. Demonstrate and employ basic skills to address the technical demands of a theatrical production.
  • 3. Execution of assignment responsibilities in technical rehearsals, during production run, and strike.
  • 4. Demonstrate correct usage of theatre terminology in a performance setting.
  • 5. Demonstrate correct safety protocol in technical rehearsals, performances and strike.
  • 6. Demonstrate the ability to use technical equipment backstage, in the scene shop, or costume shop safefly and correctly.
  • 7. Apply and organize technical tasks and responsibilities as required during the changing situations of a live performance.

Lecture Content

Assignment to production and performance responsibilities Preparation for production including necessary theatrical protocol and techniques. Identify and safely utilize appropriate tools to fulfill production requirements for performance. Basic technical theatre terminology. Recognize and demonstrate collaborative responsibilities with the director, designers, and crew supervisors. Demonstrate and apply basic skills and backstage protocol in running a production. Create, maintain or construct basic production elements.
