Course Description
This course provides instruction and supervised participation in theatre rehearsal and performance of a stage musical. Students in their second semester will gain practical experience in musical theatre performance. Students will rehearse and perform at an intermediate level in an ensemble or supporting role. Enrollment eligibility is based on a successful audition; this requirement will be validated by the instructor during the first week of enrollment. ADVISORY: THEA A126 and successful audition. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Perform with ensemble and leading actors in a supporting role in a musical, using intermediate-level voice and acting techniques, in collaboration with cast, crew and faculty.
Course Objectives
- 1. Evaluate and analyze a musical libretto for rehearsal and performance.
- 2. Create and dramatize the behavioral life of a supporting character in rehearsal and performance of a stage musical.
- 3. Apply intermediate level skills and methods to the vocal requirements in a stage musical performance.
- 4. Apply intermediate skills to the blocking and choreographic requirements in a stage musical performance.
- 5. Demonstrate use of appropriate physical and vocal warm-ups in preparation for performance in a musical.
- 6. Demonstrate a strong collaborative performance ethic with fellow performers.
- 7. Recognize and demonstrate their collaborative responsibilities with the director, musical director, and choreographer in rehearsal and performance
- 8. Recognize and demonstrate their collaborative responsibilities with the designers, stage managers and crew in rehearsal and performance.
Lecture Content
As an supporting character in a musical The script: Understanding the requirements of the librettist, the composer. Evaluation of the historical and thematic elements of the play The political, social, philosophical and moral agenda of the play. In rehearsal: Understanding the requirements of the director, musical director and choreographer. Memorization of dialogue, blocking and choreography. Working with the chorus and the leading actors. Acting and characterization: Creating a supporting character using the text and the dialogue, understanding the directors requirements. Acting and physicality: Physical, spoken and sung technique of supporting character in rehearsal and performance. Collaboration: Working with the ensemble, crew and director. Safety and protocol.
Lab Content
The following content will be covered in a combination of 90 scheduled lab hours and 18 arranged lab hours. Rehearsal Exploring and memorizing dialogue, choreography and blocking. Use of voice with projection and clarity in speech. Use of correct vocal technique in song. Choreography and working with the chorus. Creative collaboration with the chorus and the leading actors. Character in supporting roles. Integration of production elements with performance Working with props, scenery, lighting, sound and costumes. Musical Theatre Performance Vocal warm-ups and performance Physical warm ups and performance in acting and choreography. Backstage and onstage safety and protocol. Responsible collaboration and performance standards.
