Course Description

This course provides instruction and supervised participation in theatre rehearsal and performance of a comedic play. Second semester students at an intermediate level will gain practical acting experience in comic ensemble or supporting roles. Enrollment eligibility is based on a successful audition; this requirement will be validated by the instructor during the first week of enrollment. ADVISORY: THEA A123 and successful audition. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Use intermediate-level comic acting skills and timing to perform a supporting role in collaboration with others in a production of a comic stage play.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Evaluate and analyze a script for rehearsal and performance
  • 2. Create and dramatize the behavioral life of a supporting character in rehearsal and performance of a comedic play
  • 3. Memorize intermediate-level blocking and dialogue.
  • 4. Explore and communicate depth and complexity of character at an intermediate level of expertise.
  • 5. Apply intermediate level skills and methods to the physical performance of a supporting comic role onstage.
  • 6. Interact in a supporting role with others onstage using comic timing and expression.
  • 7. Recognize and demonstrate their collaborative responsibilities in rehearsal and performance
  • 8. Understand and follow the directors instructions for comic timing, staging and energy.

Lecture Content

AS AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING (intermediate level) ROLE: Rehearsal and performance protocol and procedures. a. The actors responsibilities b. The directors responsibilities c. Production staff responsibilities II. Evaluation of the historical and thematic elements of the play a. The authors intentions b. The political, social, philosophical and moral agenda of the play c.  Interpretation and evaluation of the historical circumstances. III. Actors script evaluation a. Scoring the role b. exploration and creation of prior circumstances c. Creation of time and place obligations for the script. d. Identification and evaluation of character obligation. IV. Acting skill approaches a. Relationship work with the other actors b. Creation of the behavioral life of the character. c. Preparations for investing in the emotional life of the role. d. Outlining the needs and pursuits of the character.

Lab Content

The following content will be covered in a combination of 90 scheduled lab hours and 18 arranged lab hours. Staging and rehearsal Working with the director, ensemble and leading actors.  Justifying physical action and character behavior. Use of given circumstances to justify dialogue Use of voice with projection and clarity of speech Pacing and timing of comic performance. Integration of production elements with performance Working with props, scenery, lighting, sound and costumes. Performance Vocal warm-up and performance techniques. Backstage and onstage safety and etiquette Responsible collaboration and performance standards
