Course Description

A laboratory course for the creation of scenic elements. Includes concepts of design, painting techniques, set construction, set movement, prop construction, backstage organization. Level 2 students will work on OCC stage productions on intermediate skill-level technical tasks including scenery building and painting, and prop building and backstage crew assignments. ADVISORY: THEA A110. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Work independently or with others to complete one or more intermediate skill-level tasks in the scene shop or backstage during performances. Tasks will vary by the student's area of specialization, but will be completed on time and will meet the project/assignment specifications.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Utilize backstage and shop terminology, tools, materials and techniques.
  • 2. Organize and complete an intermediate skill level project in set building, props, or in scenic painting, including reading plans, selecting materials, selecting tools, and working safely.
  • 3. Work collaboratively with designers, technicians, and other theatre personnel backstage safely, utilizing correct backstage procedures.
  • 4. Classify different types of theatres and possibilities for staging.
  • 5. Develop capability to solve unfamiliar problems often encountered in theatre productions.
  • 6. Work as a crew leader on a project or production.
  • 7. Demonstrate rigging and safety techniques

Protocol and safety in the scene shop and backstage. Introduction to specialized tools and techniques. Intermediate skill level prop construction, scenic construction and/or scene painting. Reading and interpretation of intermediate skill level technical drawings. Simple project planning--choosing and sourcing tools, materials and supplies in the scene shop.  Work backstage as a crew member or crew leader during a theatre production. Intermediate level rigging
