Course Description

This noncredit course provides practical participation in the performance and technical theater aspects of live theatrical productions presented to the community. Genres will include classical and contemporary plays and musicals presented at Orange Coast College. Performers will learn acting and other performance skills which may include dance, solo and choral singing, and audition techniques. Technical theater students will develop technical proficiency in theater production or in stage management. Performers and technicians will be selected through the audition/interview process. Open Entry/Open Exit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. PREREQUISITE: Successful audition or interview required for enrollment. Not Transferable.

1. Collaborate with others in the rehearsal, preparation and performance of a live theatrical production.

Course Objectives

• 1. Develop the technical and artistic skills to produce and perform in a theater production.
• 2. Apply techniques to collaborate effectively with a production team, understanding the different roles and responsibilities involved.
• 3. Describe the various historical and cultural styles and genres of theater production and performance.
• 4. Create a cohesive and successful production with directors, fellow actors, and production staff by active listening, giving, and receiving feedback, and resolving conflicts to ensure a smooth and productive production process.

A. STAGING - Prep and Rehearsals
Actors:

1. Working with the director, designers and stage manager

2. Creating and memorizing blocking

3. Vocal and physical warm ups and performance techniques.

4. Creation of character behavior.

5. Working with technical elements onstage- coordination of performance with props, costumes. lighting and sound cues and with scenery elements.

6. Stage direction terms and vocabulary.

7. Script analysis and memorization.

2. Planning and creation of technical elements: props, costumes, scenic elements, lights, sound, projections.

Eligible Discipline(s)

• Drama/theater Arts: Master’s degree or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance OR bachelor’s degree or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater/performance AND master’s degree in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature, or humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
