Course Description
Formerly: SWHS G200. This course will emphasize professional ethical standards, self-awareness and self-esteem, interviewing and communication skills, the relationship of theory and practice, and organization and client systems within human services. With concurrent enrollment in the fieldwork course and through professional development guidance, students will acquire and practice employable skills, competencies, and professional qualities needed for future employment. PREREQUISITE: SWHS G110. COREQUISITE: SWHS G121. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives

Instructional Techniques
Lecture and discussion on reading materials and fieldwork process. Case studies to critically examine issues within the profession. Group, discussions, and reflective writing to explore professional ethics, roles, and expectations. Supplemental electronic resources and guest speakers.
Reading Assignments
Students will read from assigned textbook and handouts. Additional readings may come from academic journals and case studies related to their fieldwork client population and/or organization.
Writing Assignments
Students will reflect critical thinking skills in written assignments which may include written reports, guided journal entries reflecting on professional roles and organizational structures, short answer exercises, and exams. Each student will identify problems or obstacles within their fieldwork site and address methods for serving clients wtihin that setting using professional standards of practice.
Out-of-class Assignments
Reflective paper discussing overall experience in the helping field incorporating relevant theoretical models and ethical practices to summarize learning theory-to-practice, growth in expertise and skills, and considerations for their future career. Each student will be required to prepare and orally present a presentation on their fieldwork organization, the target population, the services provided, and their work duties.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will analyze theory-to-practice, ethical issues, and use case studies to propose solutions to common issues faced by clients in the helping profession. Quizzes, essay questions on exams, formal reports, and additional critical analysis of concepts and theories will be required.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will reflect critical thinking skills in written assignments which may include: Written reports, guided journal entries, and a reflective paper integrating theoretical frameworks into their overall experience in the helping profession. Quizzes may be incorporated to check legal competencies.
Eligible Disciplines
Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required. Title 5, section 53410.1 Psychology: Masters degree in psychology OR bachelors degree in psychology AND masters degree in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Sociology: Masters degree in sociology OR bachelors degree in sociology AND masters degree in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work, or psychology OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
