Course Description

This introductory course is designed for students interested in developing fundamental pet knowledge and skills that will lead to a pet-care vocation. Generalized animal identification skills and basic care techniques for domesticated animal care will be covered in classroom lectures and demonstrations with a focus on mammals. Integrated field experience will include live domesticated animal care demonstrations and hands-on experiences. Skills learned in this course will be further developed when applied to additional animal groups in Intermediate Skills in Basic Animal Care. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Accurately recall fundamental basic animal care practices used in work settings and leisure time activities.
2. Demonstrate fundamental basic animal care skills safely by following simple directions, using correct tools, and employing proper techniques.

Course Objectives

• 1. Follow multi-step directions.
• 2. Recognize, differentiate, and classify domesticated and wild mammals with habitats located in Southern California.
• 3. Safely utilize appropriate tools/supplies and correct care methods to maintain the good health of a domesticated pet.
• 4. Clean up work area following participation in a pet care activity.
• 5. Demonstrate basic care of a domesticated mammals.
• 6. Accomplish a specific fundamental pet care skill within the class time limits.
• 7. Make use of fundamental basic animal care skills to complete a leisure-time activity.
