Course Description

This course will be taught by Special Programs music faculty with assistance and mentoring from field professionals. Students will get a basic knowledge of music technology-related skills that will directly apply to commonly available jobs in the Music Industry. They will learn to operate music notation software, audio equipment, lighting, projection, and DJ equipment. Students will have plenty of hands-on practice with these skills, helping them get ready for entry-level jobs that use such technologies. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of music notation software.
  2. Effectively and safely operate sound and lighting for a live performance.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of variations in acoustics, volume, and balance, and can optimize the sound during a live performance.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify major music technology components such as basic types of microphones, speakers, and cords.
  • 2. Set up a basic sound system in correct sequence using instructions given.
  • 3. Independently adjust sound output to create a balanced sound during a live performance.
  • 4. Stay focused during class labs.
  • 5. Help produce the sound, lights, and projections for a live performance at Coastline.
  • 6. Transcribe a simple melody in music notation software.
  • 7. Properly and safely disassemble, organize, and store all sound and lighting equipment after use.
