Course Description

This introductory horticulture course is designed for student gardeners interested in learning about plants. The care of regionally cultivated plant life will be covered, including the identification and care of typical home-gardened vegetables, fruits and flowers. These skills will be integrated into both classroom demonstrations and lab experiences. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Demonstrate basic horticulture skills by safely caring for ornamental, drought-tolerant and edible vegetation.
2. Accurately recall required basic plant care terms and techniques for traditional indoor and outdoor region-appropriate plant life.

Course Objectives

• 1. Report and assess the availability of the seven basic requirements for all plant-life to grow and thrive.
• 2. Provide on-going cultivation by planting, grooming, harvesting, and removing vegetative plant growth in both free-standing pots and garden beds.
• 3. Correctly identify and eliminate invasive plants based on the Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program model.
• 4. Demonstrate safe utilization and care of modern simple gardening hand tools.
• 5. Collect organic leaf litter from garden sites and correctly compost appropriate waste materials.
• 6. Develop good stewardship habits by actively collecting and recycling trash on campus and in the community.
