Course Description

Introduction to a variety of creative art forms such as decoupage, needlework, painting, drawing, weaving, woodworking, and ceramics for adults with intellectual disabilities. Emphasis on use of tools and materials necessary to render finished artwork. Skills will be assessed to determine placement in more advanced art classes. Students enrolled in the course receive an individualized student educational contract where course objectives are evaluated according to whether or not the objectives/student outcomes are targeted, satisfied, not satisfied, deferred, or not applicable. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Complete an art project by following simple directions, and safely using art tools.
  2. Possess basic knowledge of tools, art forms and techniques allowing the student to utilize art as a means of creative expression and as a leisure time activity.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Recognize and differentiate colors and shapes.
  • 2. Follow simple directions.
  • 3. Employ simple arts and crafts tools and media independently or with minimal supervision.
  • 4. Utilize art as a means of creative expression.
  • 5. Make use of art as a leisure-time activity.
  • 6. Complete a simple art project with minimal supervision.
  • 7. Clean up his/her work area following participation in an art activity.
