Course Description

Students will experience the process of preparing and performing in a short production. Skill-building through hands-on experience will be emphasized, including both on the stage and behind the scenes skills. The culmination of this course will include a student facilitated theater performance. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Develop an audition piece the student will perform in order to produce additional familiarity with the creative process of the actor.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Build understanding of the craft and technique of theatre arts.
  • 2. Develop a respect for the various roles needed to support the theatrical process.
  • 3. Explore the diversity of theatre and its community impact.
  • 4. Engage collaboratively, listening and respecting others.
  • 5. Produce a diverse production that demonstrates understanding of the rehearsal and production process.

Instructional Techniques

A. Lecture and discussion of important concepts. B. Discussion of related current issues. C. Out-of-class assignments related to preparing for performances.  D. Peer-supported evaluations. E. Use of videos or role-play scenarios.

Out-of-class Assignments

Prepare for the performance: memorize lines, prepare costumes, etc.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Direct observation of the application of critical thinking practices (e.g. analyze, discriminate, seek information/help, reason, etc.) given real scenarios related to acting. Discriminate between roles/parts in order to identify potential roles that align with the students interests and skills. Use reasoning to select audition pieces that are appropriate to the task.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will perform a short scene or monologue during a performance.
