Course Description
Designed to assist students with developmental delays in acquiring basic reading and writing skills or improving their present skills. Emphasis of the course will be on reading, comprehension, communication, and the functional application of those skills in everyday situations. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

- Read for information and leisure, with the ability to recall details, sequence of events, identify the main idea, and evaluate informational content.
- Compose a paragraph using correct grammar and simple punctuation.
Course Objectives
- 1. Express consonant blends and digraph sounds for corresponding letters.
- 2. Apply phonetic skills to sound out unfamiliar words.
- 3. Identify and read 100 commonly used Dolch sight words.
- 4. Generate definitions for simple vocabulary words.
- 5. Use context clues to decipher unfamiliar words.
- 6. Recall details and sequence events in a story.
- 7. Identify main idea of paragraph or passage.
- 8. Construct inferences, predictions, and evaluations about story content.
- 9. Compose words and simple sentences from dictation.
- 10. Distinguish and correctly use the parts of speech to write simple sentences.
- 11. Demonstrate the correct use of simple punctuation.
- 12. Compose sentences and paragraphs.
- 13. Select reading skills for personal benefit and leisure enjoyment.
