Course Description

Designed to assist students with intellectual disabilities in acquiring and improving receptive and expressive language skills. Students will develop communication skills and will learn to express their needs and thoughts. Emphasis of the course will be on the functional application of communication skills in everyday life situations. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Use learned communication skills to confidently and successfully apply social language during speaking situations.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Express a greeting, word or phrase, when cued verbally or gesturally.
  • 2. Use communication to establish contact or attract attention.
  • 3. Use consistent eye contact throughout conversation.
  • 4. Demonstrate use of good posture when conversing.
  • 5. Recognize and adhere to others personal space.
  • 6. Use appropriate rate and volume for conversational speech.
  • 7. Generate vocabulary in order to increase comprehension.
  • 8. Choose the appropriate response to simple questions and statements.
  • 9. Develop complex sentences using appropriate parts of speech.
  • 10. Select the main idea in the context of a conversation.
  • 11. Practice asking and responding to conversational questions.
  • 12. Relay information succinctly.
  • 13. Employ the polite initiation and response by recognizing interruptions by self and others.
  • 14. Apply social language skills during speaking situations such as telephone conversations, ordering in a restaurant, and vocational settings.
