Course Description

This course is a continuation of SPAN G160 and is designed for Spanish speakers or for students who are linguistically equivalent to a heritage speaker of Spanish. Students will further develop their existing Spanish language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through the analysis of literary works and composition and the study of advanced grammar. Students will analyze historical and current events, art, culture, diversity, and literary works of Chicanx, Latinx, and Spanish writers and explore the geographical and linguistic diversities of the Spanish-speaking world to value the diversity of Hispanic cultures of all Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States. This course is conducted in Spanish. PREREQUISITE: SPAN G160, SPAN G280, or four years of high school Spanish. Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify the linguistic diversity within the Spanish-speaking world.

Lab Content

Students will listen to an array of Spanish audio excerpts. Answer comprehension check questions both orally and in writing. Students will comment orally in Spanish about historical and current events, art, culture, and literary works. Group discussions and tasks Presentations Students will read and interpret literature in Spanish. Answer comprehension check questions both orally and in writing. Write a paragraph or composition related to the literature. Compose paragraph or short essay responses in Spanish. Peer review and editing Academic Spanish vocabulary and grammar use Demonstrating grammatical structures Orthography Value history, art, culture, literary works, and people of the Spanish-speaking world and in the United States. Reading, analyzing, and evaluating various literary works, historical and current events, art culture, and people of all Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States to discuss and foster appreciation and opinions developing critical thinking skills.

Textbook and original texts in Spanish such as novels, short stories, vignettes, articles, poems, etc., provided by instructor.

Writing Assignments

Writing paragraphs and compositions on topics such as lesson topics, literary works, authors, art, culture, customs, and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world.

Out-of-class Assignments

Homework assignments from the textbook and other assignments such as paragraph or short essay writing responses in Spanish.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will demonstrate their critical thinking skills by reading, analyzing, and expressing their opinions on various literary works, art, and historical and current events.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will write themed compositions and free-style writing paragraphs that will demonstrate their use of academic Spanish vocabulary and grammar on topics related to the lesson and readings at hand.

Eligible Disciplines

Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
