Course Description

This course provides Spanish instruction for students interested in healthcare fields. Students will be able to effectively communicate with patients and healthcare providers. Emphasis is on practical vocabulary and grammatical concepts needed to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients at any healthcare facility. ADVISORY: SPAN G180. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Homework activities such as but not limited to: textbook question and answer activities, conversation skills practice activities, and identify and label activities.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will create medical scenarios that will encompass the steps that a patient would typically take such as making an appointment, checking-in at the reception desk, during the office visit, at the pharmacy, and follow-ups, and include in their scenarios the interaction that the healthcare providers would typically have with the patient at each area. Students will analyze the various scenarios and participate in discussions while differentiating between medical terminology in Spanish and English.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Writing assignments that include patient intake questionnaire, dialogue writing for both the patient and the healthcare provider, summary of patient visit, and proposed plan of action. Skills demonstration through roleplaying.

Eligible Disciplines

Foreign languages: Master's degree in the language being taught OR bachelor's degree in the language being taught AND master's degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
