Course Description

This course is designed for Spanish speakers or for students who are linguistically equivalent to a heritage speaker of Spanish. Students will develop their existing Spanish language skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through the study of academic Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Students will review historical and current events, art, culture, diversity, and literary works of Chicanx, Latinx, and Spanish writers to enrich the knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world and develop an appreciation for the diversity of Hispanic cultures of all Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States. PREREQUISITE: SPAN G185 or three years of high school Spanish. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC: Corresponds to two years of high school study; SPAN G160 and SPAN G180 combined: maximum credit, 1 course. Lab Content

Students will listen to an array of Spanish audio excerpts Answer comprehension check questions both orally and in writing. Students will comment orally in Spanish about historical and current events, art, culture, and literary works. Group discussions and tasks Presentations Students will read and interpret literature in Spanish. Answer comprehension check questions both orally and in writing. Write a paragraph or composition related to the literature. Compose paragraph or short essay responses in Spanish. Textbook and original texts in Spanish such as novels, short stories, vignettes, articles, poems, etc., provided by instructor.

Writing Assignments

Writing paragraphs and compositions on topics such as lesson topics, literary works, authors, art, culture, customs, and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world.

Out-of-class Assignments

Homework assignments from the textbook and other assignments such as  paragraph or short essay writing responses in Spanish.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will demonstrate their critical thinking skills by reading, analyzing, and expressing their opinions on various literary work, art, and historical and current events.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will write themed compositions and free-style writing paragraphs that will demonstrate their use of academic Spanish vocabulary and grammar on topics related to the lesson and readings at hand.

Eligible Disciplines

Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
