Course Description
Formerly: SPAN C260. Spanish C160 is designed to enrich the communication skills of the Spanish-English bilingual student. The course focuses instruction on improving the communication skills in formal and familiar ways of speaking, reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary building, and composition. The course explores Hispanic culture through readings, plays and film. The course is conducted mainly in Spanish. Espanol C160 esta disenado para mejorar las habilidades communicativas; lectura, ortografia, vocabulario, escritura y composicion del estudiante bilingue espanol-ingles o del hispanohablante. Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Demonstrate ability to read, analyze, and respond, orally and writing, to texts of various literary genres in Spanish using correct grammar and punctuation.
- Demonstrate a better understanding and appreciation of basic cultural topics related to the Spanish-speaking world, including ones on linguistic variants and influences, important people, geography, art, literature, and political and historical events by comparing and contrasting them with the student's own culture(s).
Course Objectives
- 1. communicate orally and in writing using correct diacritical marks and punctuation on a variety of real-world topics.
- 2. demonstrate knowledge and appreciation for the Hispanic culture.
Lecture Content
Spelling Basics: Accentuation and diphthongs Spanish syllabification, stress position, accent use Spelling rules, problems caused by the interference of the English language, homophones, suffixes and prefixes Grammar and structure: Nouns and articles (Definite and indefinite and the study of gender: masculine v. feminine). The present indicative form of regular verbs. Stem-changing verbs and verbs with spelling-changes. Descriptive adjectives, the use of the verbs ser and estar, comparatives and superlatives, demonstrative adjective and pronouns The preterit tense of regular and irregular verbs as well as those with spelling-changes, the imperfect tense, and the simultaneous use of the preterit and the imperfect Direct and indirect object pronouns-formation, placement, uses; differences with English pronouns and resulting translation problems; the verb gustar and similar verbs; indefinite and negative expressions. The use of the prepositions por and para; possessive adjectives and pronouns Vocabulary-building / Cultural knowledge: Enrichment of the students current Spanish vocabulary base through targeted vocabulary lists, exercises, and readings. Readings from authors from Spain and various Spanish –speaking areas of the world, including legends, texts from Mexico, Cuba, Central and South Americas. Readings, film clips, and discussions to enhance the students awareness of the rich cultural heritage of Spanish-speaking countries and regions and the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.

Instructional Techniques
A variety of activities, (including lecture employing current technology and/or handouts, video and/or audio presentations, pair and group work) will be employed. Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language is directed toward raising learners awareness of the lexical nature of language. Activities will be structured to enable the learners to comprehend lexical phrases as unanalyzed "chunks" and to use whole phrases without necessarily having to analyze their constituent parts.

View videos from Hispanic filmmakers as a springboard to cultural themes and language functions. Partner chat and virtual chat.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Activities which require learners to become more active and questioning critical thinkers such as group work, project-based work and presentations which involve comparing and contrasting; classifying; evaluating; cause and effect; ranking; identifying right from wrong and facts from opinion; and summarizing will be employed.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Translation Spanish to English/ English to Spanish, compare and contrastive analysis of literary works of various genres. Workbook/text assignments through the textbook Supersite.
Eligible Disciplines
Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
