Course Description
This course is designed for students whose primary experience with Spanish has been with their family and/or community, and who have had little to no exposure to Spanish in an academic setting. Course instruction builds upon the students’ existing linguistic skills as well as their cultural heritage and knowledge. Students will improve their proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and develop a heightened awareness of the diversity of Hispanic cultures, as manifested in Spanish-speaking countries and in the United States. This course is conducted in Spanish. PREREQUISITE: SPAN A185 or SPAN A185H or 3 years of high school Spanish or equivalent. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: SPAN 220.C-ID: SPAN 220.

Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate the fundamental grammatical structure of Spanish and the mastery of concepts that will expand on the morphological and syntactical elements
- 2. Demonstrate new practical vocabulary that will enable the student to become proficient in situations that go beyond the basic survival skills.
- 3. Use learned grammatical concepts and lexical items within oral and written communicative contexts
- 4. Demonstrate oral skills in controlled communicative activities, as well as open-ended discussions and debates.
- 5. Demonstrate awareness of contemporary Hispanic cultural and geographical locations of Spanish-speaking countries.
- 6. Recognize literary figures of the Hispanic world and demonstrate comprehension of literary works written by Hispanic authors.
- 7. Demonstrate an understanding of basic literary concepts.
- 8. Recognize important artistic works of the Hispanic world and understand the social context in which they were created.
- 9. Demonstrate critical thinking by expressing original ideas orally and in writing.

Hispanic cultural practices and productions (e.g., values, traditions, lifestyle, forms of artistic expression, etc.) B. Register 1. Lexical variations 2. Idiomatic expressions 3. Vocabulary expansion 4. Formal vs. informal 5. Standard vs. non-standard C. Grammar 1. Categories of words 2. Verbal tenses in indicative and subjunctive modes 3. Infinitive vs. gerund usage D. Lexicon 1. Word families 2. Prefixes and suffixes 3. Cognates and “false friends” 4. Inference of meaning through context E. Spelling 1. Rules of accentuation 2. Homophones 3. Commonly misspelled words F. Writing 1. Discussion of plagiarism 2. Pre-writing, writing and post-writing activities in and out of the classroom 3. Editing techniques 4. Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
