Course Description

Screening procedures and equipment used in evaluation of client status and development of treatment protocols. Therapeutic techniques, use of protocol forms, checklists and anecdotal records for speech, hearing, and language disorders. This course includes therapeutic procedures used in client protocol applications and in patient safety issues. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Demonstrate correct use of screening forms/equipment for speech/language/hearing disorders.
  2. Determine appropriate materials to be used in therapy from therapeutic objectives, and demonstrate the use of stimuli, cues, prompts, and correction procedures associated with those objectives.

Instructional Techniques

A combination of lecture, technique demonstration and application of skills in laboratory setting.

Reading Assignments

Reading from text and handouts. (Approximately 2 hours per week)

Writing Assignments

Written examinations and lab assignment activities related to writing lesson plans from given therapy objectives, and how they will be implemented. (Approximately 2 hours per week)

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will complete textbook readings, and lab assignments/activities related to therapy techniques for various speech and language disorders. (Approximately 2 hours per week)

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Student written tests. Development of appropriate and thorough lesson plans from speech and language objectives. Implementation of therapy techniques, with adjustments as needed.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Written examinations, development of lesson plans from therapy objectives, implementation of therapy techniques. Calculations of MLU and chronological age.

Eligible Disciplines

Speech language pathology: Masters degree in speech pathology, speech language pathology, speech language and hearing sciences, communicative disorders, communicative disorders and sciences, communication sciences and disorders, or education with a concentration in speech pathology, OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
