Course Description

This course consists of clinical lab experience and the application of radiologic technology skills. The course is a competency-based curriculum emphasizing radiologic technology skills, with an emphasis on independent critical thinking and decision making. Advanced cranial studies and torso exams will be emphasized. PREREQUISITE: Acceptance into the OCC Radiologic Technology Program (Cohort restriction) and RADT A177. COREQUISITE: RADT A270. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Apply positioning skills learned to performing cranial, trauma, and non-routine exams in the clinical setting.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills, adherence to radiation protection practices, and exhibit professional behaviors.
  3. Recognize and propose corrections for common image errors for the required exams.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Apply knowledge of professional ethics pertinent to the interactions with patients, staff and other health care professionals.*
  • 2. Apply to radiology department operational policies and clinical education policies as stated in the student clinical manual.*
  • 3. Perform duties within the ancillary support service areas such as - image processing, patient transportation.*
  • 4. Explain specific departmental emergency codes.**
  • 5. Describe patient emergency care situations such as contrast media reaction to include operation of required equipment.**
  • 6. Demonstrate manipulation of technical factors to produce quality diagnostic radiographs.*
  • 7. Demonstrate advanced image evaluation and image analysis skills and perform required modifications with 80% accuracy.**
  • 8. Position patient properly for all cranial and torso exams as outlined in the course content and scope.*
  • 9. Arrange and organize all course paperwork and documentation.*
  • 10. Demonstrate ability to perform with general supervision all previously identified radiographic exams.*

Lab Content

Orientation to new radiology department for advanced phase of clinical training. Review department operational structure. Format of the department structure including key personnel. Student training policies and procedures. Radiographic procedure manual. Student rotation assignment. Introduction to departmental Quality Assurance Program. Orientation to radiographic rooms. Check-off list for equipment operation. Required patient safety equipment, oxygen, suction, crash cart. Student responsibilities in maintaining radiographic rooms. Sitting-up room for radiographic procedures. Department work flow and patient flow. Patient transportation. Room assignments vs radiographic procedures i.e., fluoro, chest, general diagnostic, special procedures. Radiographic paperwork responsibilities. Introduction to departments support services. Image processing Reception Transportation Assignment to clinical training as specified per rotation schedule - locations to include: General diagnostic Fluoroscopy Special Procedures Surgery Radiology Nursing Pediatrics – to be schedules with Childrens Hospital, Orange (CHOC) Different work shift schedules to provide trauma and off hours experience Continue with clinical training as specified per rotation schedule, locations as identified. Students will continue with all previously learned skills acquired during first year of training, including, but             not limited to: (indirect supervision) Routine fluoroscopic procedures Routine diagnostic procedures chest abdomen extremities spinal column routine skull portable radiography – requires direct supervision Students will continue to demonstrate basic care skills. Patient transport techniques. Effective patient communication skills. Adherence to patient confidentiality, comfort and modesty. Response to departmental emergency codes, i.e., fire, earthquake. Respond to patient in an emergency distress situation, i.e., code blue, contrast reaction. Continue with clinical training. Position patient and set technical factors for specialized skull radiography including: Facial bones Nasal bones Mandible Sinuses Position patient and set technical factors for torso x-rays: Pelvis/hip Sacroiliac joints Shoulder girdle Ribs Clavicle Sternum Scapula AC and SC joints Assist the radiologist and staff technologist in the performance of minor special procedure contrast studies as available. Assess mid-semester evaluations.  Complete RADT A271 mid-semester evaluation. Revise clinical assignments as necessary. Continue with clinical training. Continue evaluation sheets required for competency check-off procedure - minimum 4 must be                 completed before competency practicum can be signed. Sign off competency list - direct supervision category or indirect supervision category, which ever is appropriate. Observe with final evaluation of students ability to perform the exams required. Determine final clinical co urse grade by completing RADT A271 clinical objectives, evaluate students ability in all areas identified. Review completed RADT A271 objectives with student - identify students strengths and areas for improvement. Determine goals for next clinical course.

Eligible Disciplines

Radiological technology: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
