Course Description

This course consists of clinical lab experience and the application of radiologic technology skills. The course utilizes a competency-based curriculum emphasizing radiologic technology skill development. Radiographic skills to be emphasized will be routine skull radiography, portable radiography, minor special procedures, and introduction to pediatric and trauma radiography. PREREQUISITE: Acceptance into the OCC Radiologic Technology Program (Cohort restriction). Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Apply positioning skills learned to performing portable radiographic and surgical exams in the clinical setting.
  2. Perform 80% of the radiographic exams as listed in the First Year Clinical Practicum.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills, adherence to radiation protection practices, and exhibit professional behaviors.
  4. Recognize common image errors for the required exams.

Lab Content

Clinical training: Continue with previous skills as outlined in RADT A176 Assignment to diagnostic radiographic exams with emphasis on routine cranial and torso exams Assignment to different work shift schedules to provide trauma and off-hours experience Continue with clinical training as specified per rotation schedule. Assignment to minor contrast procedures as available. Assignment to other non-routine radiographic exams. Trauma Specialized units and equipment Assessment of students clinical progress towards completion of end of the semester clinical objectives. Verify competencies completed Evaluate clinical schedule and revise if needed Assess clinical documentation. Expansion of clinical assignment to include the following: Orientation to portable radiography. Orientation to surgical protocols and procedures. Sterile field parameters Specialized radiographic equipment - C arm Commonly performed surgical procedures        Completion of 85% of exams listed on 1st proficiency practicum Direct supervision is required until proficiency practicum indicated indirect supervision has been achieved. Introduction to pediatric exams to include principles of pediatric care and radiography Immobilization techniques Filming and technical factors Psychological approach Radiation protection Performance of routine radiographic exams with decreasing direct supervision. Demonstrate ability to perform positioning critique and analyze image formation with 80% accuracy. Maintain less than 10% film repeat rate. Complete RADT A177 clinical objectives. Assess final clinical competency list - minimum requirement is 80% completion under direct supervision  of the exams. Determine final course grade by completing RT 177 objectives and evaluation of students ability in all areas identified. Verify all clinical course documentation. Review completed RADT A177 objectives with student – identify strengths and areas for improvement. Verify completion of all previous clinical objectives RADT A171 - RADT A176 – Satisfying first year program clinical requirements enabling student to enroll in 2nd year clinical courses. Determine goals for next clinical course RADT A271. Failure to complete all RADT A177 objectives will result in NON-successful completion of 1st year clinical education.
