Course Description

This course provides an overview of healthcare careers and their respective career paths, educational requirements, skill requirements, and professional responsibilities. Essential skills required by health-related professions, such as emphasizing personal attributes, demonstrating professionalism, engaging in teamwork, and building communication skills, will be covered. Students will evaluate the pros and cons of careers they are interested in pursuing to guide them in making educational and career decisions for various public health and healthcare occupations. ADVISORY: English, one level below transfer (ie, eligibility for English composition (CID ENGL 100) and reading a course with an exiting skill of ability to read a college level text.   1. Explain the U.S. healthcare system, including how individuals access healthcare and basic principles that influence healthcare economics.
  2. Describe the different public and healthcare careers and what they need to prepare for obtaining one.
  3. Define general medical terms used in public health and healthcare careers.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Explain the history of healthcare in the U.S., including the current state of healthcare in the U.S.
  • 2. Identify and describe various public health and healthcare careers, career pathways, and educational and training requirements.
  • 3. Demonstrate job research techniques to learn about various public health and healthcare careers and job-seeking skills.
  • 4. Identify and describe the personal skills, qualities, and characteristics necessary for specific public health and healthcare workers.
  • 5. Practice skills necessary for public health and healthcare workers in various workplace settings.
  • 6. Demonstrate how to use web-based applications to search for information related to various public health and healthcare positions.
  • 7. Identify and describe the professional skills, qualities, and characteristics necessary for specific public health and healthcare workers.
  • 8. Explain important law, ethics, and professionalism in public health and healthcare
  • 9. Employ basic medical terminology.

Reading Assignments

Students will read assigned chapters from the textbook and instructor-provided materials. (2 hours a week)

Writing Assignments

Students will complete written assignments with instructor-provided prompts.  They will complete a personal profile related to the skills developed in class. (2 hours a week)

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will complete various assignments related to career exploration and public health/healthcare careers.  Students will complete written assignments with instructor-provided prompts to help them explore their strengths, characteristics, and motivations in pursuing a public health or healthcare profession. They may also participate in group assignments. (3 hours a week)

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will assess their career path options and each professions requirements and decide how they will proceed.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will complete assignments that require written responses to instructor-provided prompts. Students will work collaboratively to identify how different public health and healthcare careers help keep communities healthy.

Eligible Disciplines

Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required. Title 5, section 53410.1 Health: Masters degree in health science, health education, biology, nursing, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, dietetics, or nutrition OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in public health, or any biological science OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Health care ancillaries (medical assisting, hospice worker, home care aide...: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
