Course Description

Formerly: PSYC G158. This course introduces the scientific study of psychopathology and atypical behaviors, broadly defined. Students investigate abnormal behavior from a variety of perspectives including biological, psychological, and sociocultural approaches. An integrative survey of theory and research in abnormal behavior, and intervention and prevention strategies for psychological disorders are also introduced. 2. Compare and contrast the various theoretical perspectives on etiology and implications for treatment of various psychological disorders.
3. Summarize the major disorder classifications giving concrete examples using appropriate diagnostic terminology (i.e., DSM).
4. Explain specific research methods and the ethical principles for the study and treatment of psychopathology.

Course Objectives

• 1. Discuss the criteria that are used to define abnormal behavior.
• 2. Describe measures of abnormal behavior including assessments, examinations, and diagnostic systems.
• 3. Differentiate contemporary perspectives as they relate to abnormal behavior including biological, psychodynamic, cognitive, humanistic, and others.
• 4. Analyze the various methods used to study psychopathology.
• 5. Explain the relationship between cultural norms and labeling abnormal behavior.
• 6. Define basic biological and psychological terminology to describe psychopathology and atypical behavior and mental processes.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will write critiques of scientific articles/videos. They will answer critical thinking essay questions on exams, as well as write a paper that analyzes a contemporary method of research.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will be presented with scenarios of individuals who are exhibiting various symptoms. They will practice assessing, diagnosing, and setting up a treatment option that has proven effective in the current literature.
