Course Description
Final clinical experience in an affiliated Sleep Disorders Center. Students will work with patients and technologists at night in the laboratory to obtain interpretable polygraphs. COREQUISITE: PSG A265. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives
- I Objectives related to student behavior:
- I. 1. Demonstrate a willingness to adhere to the individual lab policies and regulations.
- I. 2. Adhere to appropriate dress code, being neat, well groomed, appropriate for clinical and adhering to Orange Coast College catalog policy for student conduct.
- I. 3. Assume responsibility for notifying the department supervisor when unable to attend or when expected to be late.
- I. 4. Make up any time due to absence or tardiness.
- I. 5. Assume responsibility for arriving to clinical on time and must stay allotted time per the lab schedule.
- I. 6. Conduct self in an appropriate ethical manner as a health care professional. At all times the student will maintain patient confidentiality and safety.

- II Objectives related to performance:
- II. 1. Calibrate the machine within 100% accuracy. Make all necessary adjustments to the instrument for accurate recordings.
- II. 2. Learn the lab protocol within the first week.
- II. 3. Make a written summary of valid patient data.
- II. 4. Apply electrodes accurately within 60 minutes.
- II. 5. Use appropriate machine settings to provide optimal recording as necessary.
- II. 6. Identify and monitor artifacts with 85% accuracy.
- II. 7. Identify normal sleep polygraph activity with 95% accuracy.
- II. 8. Ability to stage and score polygraphs with 70% accuracy.
- II. 9. Recognize abnormal events such as sleep apnea, cardiac arrhythmias, sleep behaviors, and common sleep entities.
- II. 10. Titrate CPAP, BiPAP, and Oxygen as directed.
- II. 11. Document all work, including calibrations, instrument settings, clinical findings, modifications to recording, and appropriate patient information.
Lecture Content
This is the final in a series of clinical rotations which will provide an opportunity to practice Polysomnographic testing on patients at a designated affiliated sleep disorder center. Students will be expected to observe and to perform Polysomnography and MSLT testing on clinical patients, maintain laboratory records and take patient history information. This clinical will require thirty-six hours per week of clinical practice, excluding holidays. The goals for this internship are for you to be able to: Set up patient monitoring equipment within 60 minutes. This will provide increased hands on time to enhance your proficiency, efficiency and confidence with Polysomnographic equipment. Perform routine testing. Recognize normal Polysomnographic chart data activity and be able to recognize basic abnormalities. Utilize common treatment methods as directed.

Instructional Techniques

Students will be expected to observe and to perform MSLT and Polysomnographic testing on clinical patients, maintain laboratory records and take patient history information.

Writing Assignments
Proficiency is demonstrated by evaluation of the stated objectives above. Writing assignments are based on the clinical facility requirements and may include patient history taking, technical record evaluations, and technical and clinical notations on the Polysomnographic recording.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will be evaluated according to the objectives stated both mid-rotation and end rotation. Mid-rotation evaluation is done in order to encourage students good performance, identify areas of improvement, and assess student progress. Polysomnography 285 is a credit/no-credit course. A grade of CR or better is required to pass. A grade of NC will be issued for students who have not completed all required clinical hours at the end of the rotation. Grades issued:CR - Meets or surpasses all objectivesNC - Fails to meet objectives Attendance: It is the student responsibility to notify the department in a timely manner if unable to attend or expected to be late. The student is required to arrive on time and stay the allotted time per the lab schedule. Any time lost due to absence or tardiness MUST be made up during that clinical rotation. Each clinical shift is twelve hours. (Clinical will recognize designated school holidays) No more than 12 hours may be applied to required hours per shift. If a student wishes to stay more than the allotted hours, and the clinical can accommodate, this is encouraged but cannot be used for an additional shift. Students may be removed from a clinical site, which may result in failing clinical for the following: Excessive absences Excessive tardiness Endangering a patient Direct insubordination Inappropriate dress or behavior If there is an extended period of absence due to circumstances outside student control (illness, hospitalization, crisis) details must be worked out with the clinical coordinator and the clinical site.
